 New partners, but mission to help refugees unchanged

– Fort Wayne’s Burmese Advocacy Center has reopened in a new location, a move its leadership said reflects a commitment to the ongoing needs of the local refugee and immigrant population.

The 1,200-square-foot space at 2424 Lake Ave. will offer immigrants and refugees services, including family budgeting, job-skills training and placement, health, language and ethnic community leadership training and child-care counseling.

Laura J. Gardner | The Journal Gazette "The Burmese Advocacy Center is seeking a new location for offices and classroom space. The center aids Burmese arrivals new to Fort Wane and the United States in their accultration."While the number of Burmese refugees flowing into Fort Wayne is declining, the need for help in acclimating refugees to life in a different country is still great. The impending closing of Catherine Kasper Place introduces yet another challenge for the Burmese Advocacy Center and the thousands of refugees the group serves.

The Burmese Advocacy Center and other refugee-assistance groups based at Catherine Kasper Place were told about a month ago that they would need to find a new home. The large building at 2826 S. Calhoun St. has become too difficult and expensive to maintain, considering that fewer refugees are expected to arrive over the next few years. The AWS Foundation owns the building and donated its use to the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation.
